Winter wonderland.

Whether downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing or sledging – anyone who feels at home in powdery snow is only a few kilometres away from absolute bliss in the Rhine Valley.

Thanks to its convenient location on the edge of the Alps, the St. Gallen Rhine Valley offers the local population countless opportunities to indulge their love of winter sports.

The three best-known skiing areas in the St. Gallen region, Toggenburg, Flumserberg and Pizol, are just a short distance from the Rhine Valley and within easy reach by car or public transport. The same is true of the numerous skiing areas on the other side of the border. Here the Vorarlberg Alps beckon with the optimum snow conditions. And the major skiing areas in Graubünden are also less than an hour away.

Ski tour facilities are also not far from the Rhine Valley. In nearby Sarganserland, Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein, a host of peaks await to be scaled. Nearby Appenzellerland also offers outstanding opportunities for great snowshoe tours.

Anyone who enjoys cross-country skiing will find excellent ski trails with good snow conditions right on their doorstep at Gais cross-country skiing centre. Equipment and lessons can also be obtained here.

Anyone who prefers the downhill experience on a sledge is ideally catered for right on the doorstep. In the winter, a sledge run takes you from Stoss down to Altstätten. And you can take the Appenzell railway to get up there. But also in Pizol and on Kronberg that downhill thrill forms part of the day for the whole sledging family.

When did you last have a turn at ice skating? In Altstätten, an ice-skating rink at Eisbahn zum Stosswirt is open from November to February. Here you can also try your hand at ice stock sport (also known as Bavarian curling) or enjoy cheese specialities in the chalet.

And don’t forget the many lovely footpaths along the Rhine or along the Rhine Valley ridgeway, which also offers fantastic walks in the winter.
