The Rhine Valley is an especially charming place to explore on foot. You will find well-signposted paths and magnificent views of an impressive landscape of mountains and rivers. Altstätten, Rhine Valley Pro Riet Society
The Rhine Valley Pro Riet Society based in Altstätten (SG) was formed in 1987 from the Pro Riet Action Committee. This committee was established in November 1983 and succeeded in getting popular initiatives accepted to reclassify the two peat-cutting areas Bannriet and Spitzmäder in the municipalities of Altstätten and Oberriet der reclassified from agricultural zones to green belt land. Since the two areas have been protected by nature conservation laws and their proper management controlled, the society has become increasingly engaged in championing ecological upgrades in the whole St. Gallen Rhine Valley and the lower slopes between Au and Lienz.

The leisure map is ideally suited to active people and families. The map shows all routes available for hikers, cyclists, mountain bikers and in-line skaters. It also includes a handy booklet running to more than 100 pages with lots of tips and highlights from Eastern Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Kobelwald Crystal Cave
The Kobelwald Crystal Cave is located above the hamlet Kobelwald near Oberriet in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. Every year it captivates thousands of visitors. The atmosphere of the cavern, the calcite crystals, the stalactites and stalagmites, the rushing water and the sound and light effects exert a huge fascination on young and old visitors alike. It is unique in Switzerland as a walk-in, water-bearing cave with major crystal formations.

Au vineyard trail
The Monstein vineyard trail is situated in the region of Au. The municipality of Au lies in the St.Gallen Rhine Valley on the border with Austria. It is easily accessible by public transport and by car. The hike starts either from the bus stop at the Gemeindehaus Au, the railway station of Au or as a circular route from Hard.

Walking trails
Wellbeing improves and exercise in the fresh air does you good. In the St. Gallen Rhine Valley there are 5 signposted walking trails of differing lengths and difficulty. The starting points are located in Altstätten, Balgach, Heerbrugg, Oberriet and Widnau.

Rhine Valley High Route
Welcome to the St. Gallen Rhine Valley! The Rhine Valley High Route runs from Lake Constance through the Rhine Valley, Obertoggenburg and Werdenberg to Sarganserland. This makes for a hike with lots of variation: the view over the impressive Swabian Sea, as Lake Constance is known colloquially, and the Rhine delta is as fascinating as the magnificent vineyard slopes, the fertile plains and the wild romantic mountainous areas and the old villages.

Berneck wine trail
The village of Berneck in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley is known throughout Switzerland as a wine village above all, since Bernecker wine enjoys an excellent reputation among connoisseurs. The two steep slopes either side of the village provide the ideal conditions for viticulture.
