The Rhine Valley Pro Riet Society based in Altstätten (SG) was formed in 1987 from the Pro Riet Action Committee. Since the two areas have been protected by nature conservation laws and their proper management controlled, the society has become increasingly engaged in championing ecological upgrades in the whole St. Gallen Rhine Valley and the lower slopes between Au and Lienz.
